Broke The Chains

18”x24” acrylic painting done on a stretched canvas. Back in 2021 I painted the first part of this concept. The chains represent the patriarchy and how it chains woman to standards and a way we “should be.” The first chapter of this concept showed struggle in the body movements, but looking at the new chapter, the chains of the patriarch is broken, she realized she is not bound to the standards and can be or do whatever she wants and transforms into her authentic self. This time I did a self portrait to show the attachment to myself in this scenario and the ways I personally have dealt this phenomenon. The ways I have grown into my authentic self regardless of anyone’s opinions or ideas on who I should be. I wanted a deep stare facial expression to show I don’t need to smile all the time to be feminine. The third eye represents my higher self having equal control in my every move. The red spirals coming out of the eyes represent the summoning of other woman falling into their true selves and to keep away all the societal pressures. I did the piece in a soft blending style with marks/doodles because I love the feeling of blending and having a surrealist vibe but also attuning to my city life/graffiti influences.
